# Ask Slackbot about your team's SageOx context

Slackbot, Slack's built-in AI assistant, can connect to SageOx and answer questions about your team's discussions, decisions, and coding sessions without leaving Slack. Ask it _"what did we decide about the ingestion retry policy?"_, _"what are my action items from this week's discussions?"_, or _"who should I ask about the cast renderer?"_ and it queries SageOx on your behalf.

Under the hood, Slackbot is an [MCP](/docs/mcp) client: it connects to the same SageOx MCP server that Claude and ChatGPT use, with the same per-user authorization: Slackbot sees exactly what **you** can see in SageOx, and nothing more.

## Before you start

- **The SageOx Slack app must be installed in your workspace.** A workspace admin installs it from the team's **Settings → Communication** (the same install that lets SageOx post to channels).
- **A SageOx account that belongs to at least one team.**

<Callout type="info">
  Slack shows **"App is not approved by Slack"** on the install screen. This appears for every app that is not yet listed in the Slack Marketplace, ours included. Nothing is broken and the install is fully functional. If the app was installed before SageOx added Slackbot support, the admin reconnects once so it picks up the `mcp:connect` permission.
</Callout>

## Connect

<Steps>

<Step>
### Open Slackbot

Search for _Slackbot_ in the Slack sidebar, or open any Slackbot DM.
</Step>

<Step>
### Ask it to connect SageOx

Slackbot walks you through authorizing the SageOx server.
</Step>

<Step>
### Authorize

A browser tab opens on SageOx's consent page. Review what Slackbot will be able to do and click **Allow**.
</Step>

<Step>
### Ask a first question

Back in Slack, ask _"What is SageOx and how do I get started?"_ A reply drawing on your team's SageOx context, marked as queried via MCP, confirms the connection is live.
</Step>

</Steps>

## What you can ask

| Ask Slackbot | SageOx answers from |
|---|---|
| "What did we decide about _project X_?" | Recorded discussions, saved decisions, and coding sessions across your teams |
| "What are my action items from this week's discussions?" | Action items with owners and due dates extracted from recorded discussions |
| "Who should I ask about _the cast renderer_?" | The team's expertise map |
| "What did I miss this week?" | A ranked digest of recent discussions and decisions |
| "Where did that claim come from?" | The source discussion or session behind an answer |

If you belong to more than one team, Slackbot asks which team to search the first time a question is ambiguous.

## Permissions and prompts

- **Answers are yours.** Slackbot answers you privately, from what you can see in SageOx. Posting an answer into a channel shares it with that channel, the same as pasting an answer from any AI tool.
- **Reading is silent.** Tools that only read SageOx run without a prompt.
- **Writing asks first.** If Slackbot wants to publish a Murmur or save a session, Slack shows an **Allow once / Always allow / Deny** prompt before it runs.
- Slack lets each person connect up to five MCP servers at a time.

## Disconnect

Your Slackbot grant is listed with your other MCP connections at [/settings/security](/settings/security). Disconnecting takes effect on Slackbot's next call.
